When you're facing criminal charges, every decision matters—who you call, what you say, and who represents you. At Varghese Summersett, our criminal defense attorneys are Board Certified specialists, former prosecutors, and experienced trial lawyers who understand what's at stake: your freedom, your record, and your future.

We've represented clients charged with everything from misdemeanor DWI to federal drug conspiracies, murder to white collar fraud. Board Certification from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization is earned by fewer than 10% of Texas attorneys. Our team includes Board Certified Criminal Law Specialists Anna Summersett, Benson Varghese, and Letty Martinez, and Board Certified Juvenile Law Specialists Mike Hanson and Lisa Herrick. Why Varghese Summersett?

01

Board Certified Criminal Law Specialists

Anna Summersett, Benson Varghese, and Letty Martinez are Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. Mike Hanson and Lisa Herrick are Board Certified in Juvenile Law. Board Certification requires rigorous examination, substantial trial experience, and peer review — and is held by fewer than 10% of Texas attorneys. When your case requires the highest level of verified expertise, Board Certification matters.

02

Former Prosecutors

Several of our attorneys were once the people charging you. They know how cases are built, what prosecutors prioritize, and where the weaknesses are. That insider knowledge changes how we negotiate and how we try cases.

03

Trial-Ready Every Time

We prepare every case as if it's going to trial. Prosecutors know when they're facing lawyers who will fight. That posture produces better outcomes — in plea negotiations and in the courtroom.

04

Available 24/7

Arrests happen at midnight. We answer. Our attorneys are available around the clock because the moment after an arrest is when legal representation matters most.

05

We Treat Every Client Like Family

Your case is not a file number to us. When someone puts their trust in our firm during the hardest moment of their life, we take that seriously. You'll have direct access to your attorney and honest answers about your case.

Criminal Cases We Handle

State and Federal Criminal Defense Across Texas

DWI & Intoxication Offenses +

A DWI arrest can upend your life in a single night — your license, your job, and your freedom are all at stake. Whether this is your first offense or you're facing felony charges due to prior convictions, or the serious allegations of intoxication assault or intoxication manslaughter, our attorneys scrutinize every aspect of the stop, the field sobriety testing, and the reliability of breath and blood results.

Texas has both administrative license revocation and criminal prosecution running on parallel tracks after a DWI arrest. We handle both, fighting to preserve your license at the ALR hearing while defending the criminal case.

Drug Crimes +

Drug charges in Texas carry penalties that can be devastatingly disproportionate to the circumstances. A small amount of marijuana can mean jail time. A prescription medication in the wrong bottle can become a felony. Distribution or trafficking allegations can mean decades in state or federal prison.

We represent people accused of possessing, manufacturing, or distributing controlled substances — from marijuana to methamphetamine to prescription medications — including federal drug conspiracy cases. We challenge the constitutionality of the search, the reliability of lab testing, and the state's evidence at every turn.

Assault & Violent Crimes +

Accusations of violence carry a stigma that can damage your relationships and career before you ever see a courtroom. In domestic violence cases, you may find yourself locked out of your home with a protective order in place before anyone has heard your side of the story.

We defend clients charged with assault in all its forms — misdemeanor assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, aggravated robbery, terroristic threats, and deadly conduct. We also handle murder and manslaughter cases where the stakes are highest.

Sex Crimes +

There is no accusation more likely to destroy a person's life than a sexual offense allegation. The stigma is immediate. The potential consequences — including lifetime sex offender registration — can follow you for decades. And the pressure to accept a plea, even when innocent, can feel overwhelming.

We defend clients accused of sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, indecency with a child, online solicitation of a minor, possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, and related offenses. These cases require careful examination of the allegations, the investigators' conduct, and the evidence.

White Collar & Fraud Crimes +

White collar investigations often begin long before you know you're a target. By the time charges are filed, prosecutors may have spent months or years building their case with grand jury subpoenas, financial records, and cooperating witnesses.

We defend individuals and businesses facing fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, forgery, identity theft, tax violations, and related charges in both state and federal court. These matters require a defense team that understands both the law and the complex financial context underlying the allegations.

Weapons Offenses +

Texas has some of the most permissive gun laws in the country — but weapons charges still carry serious consequences, particularly for anyone with a prior felony or in cases that fall under federal jurisdiction. A mistake about where you can carry or your eligibility to possess a firearm can result in years in prison.

We handle state and federal weapons charges including unlawful carrying of a weapon, felon in possession, prohibited weapons, and federal firearms violations including possession of an unregistered NFA item.

Federal Criminal Defense +

Federal cases operate differently. The resources of the federal government, mandatory minimum sentencing, complex guidelines calculations, and the formality of federal court all require a different kind of preparation. Federal prosecutors are selective — they file cases they believe they can win — but that doesn't mean the outcome is predetermined.

We represent clients in federal court across Texas in drug trafficking cases, firearms offenses, fraud and financial crimes, conspiracy charges, immigration violations, and supervised release violations.

Juvenile Crimes +

When a young person is accused of a crime, the stakes go beyond immediate legal consequences. A juvenile adjudication can affect their education, opportunities, and sense of themselves at a formative moment. The system is designed to prioritize rehabilitation — but that doesn't always happen without an attorney who knows how to advocate within that framework.

We represent juveniles facing delinquency allegations and handle certification hearings where prosecutors seek to try a young person as an adult. Our Board Certified Juvenile Law Specialists bring unmatched depth of knowledge to these proceedings.

Theft & Property Crimes +

Theft charges — whether a misdemeanor shoplifting allegation or a serious felony — can mark you in ways that make it harder to find work, rent an apartment, and move forward for years after the case is resolved. Many of these cases turn on questions of intent, identification, or property value.

We represent clients facing theft, burglary, criminal trespass, unauthorized use of a vehicle, organized retail theft, and related property offense allegations at both the misdemeanor and felony level.

Fort Worth

One City Place Building, Downtown Fort Worth
300 Throckmorton Street, Suite 700
Fort Worth, Texas 76102

Our Fort Worth headquarters sits within seven blocks of every courthouse that matters in Tarrant County: the Criminal Courthouse, the Family Law Center, the Civil Courthouse, and the Federal Courthouse for the Northern District of Texas. That proximity is an advantage we use every day. We've built deep relationships in Fort Worth's legal community over decades and have tried hundreds of cases to verdict in Tarrant County courts. From misdemeanor DWI to capital murder, our Fort Worth attorneys are ready to fight for you.

Dallas

2100 Ross Building
2100 Ross Avenue, Suite 950
Dallas, Texas 75201

Our Dallas office serves clients throughout Dallas County, Rockwall County, Kaufman County, and beyond. We handle criminal cases in Dallas County's state courts, the federal courts of the Northern and Eastern Districts of Texas, and all courts within driving distance of downtown Dallas. Whether you're facing charges in the Frank Crowley Courts Building or in federal court on Commerce Street, we know these courts and the people who work in them.

Houston

Our Houston office is the home base for criminal defense in Harris County and Fort Bend County. Whether you're facing charges in the Harris County Criminal Justice Center on Franklin Street, the Fort Bend County Courts at Richmond, or in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas, our attorneys know these courts and appear in them regularly.

Harris County is one of the busiest criminal court systems in the country. Fort Bend County has grown into a major suburban jurisdiction with its own distinct courts and prosecutors. Both require attorneys who are present in those courthouses — not lawyers who treat them as out-of-town cases. Our Houston team brings the same Board Certified, trial-tested approach that built our reputation in North Texas to every client we serve on the Gulf Coast.

Southlake

Kirkwood Oaks Business Center
3120 Sabre Drive, Suite 110
Southlake, Texas 76092

Our Southlake office serves Northeast Tarrant County, Denton County, Collin County, and surrounding communities including Keller, Grapevine, Trophy Club, Flower Mound, and Lewisville. We handle criminal cases in Denton County courts, Collin County courts, and throughout the suburbs north and west of Fort Worth. For clients who prefer to meet outside of downtown, our Southlake location provides full access to the firm's resources closer to home.
